Initially when i first discovered the title of the book on Amazon . com.com, I understood I simply needed to purchase it. The main reason? Since I was raised in Little Italia too, and resided within the "neighborhood" for 48 years, before I moved to California, Florida at the end of 1995.
"Reminiscences of Becoming An Adult in Little Italia, NY - A Memoir by Guz Petruzzelli," is just 83 pages lengthy, and perhaps just a little costly at .99. But that aside, this book gives a precise account of the items it had been like becoming an adult in Manhattan's Little Italia more that 50 last year.
Puzzle Game
Petruzzelli is really a couple of years over the age of me, and that he was raised in Little Italia on Mulberry Street above Canal Street, whereas, I was raised only a half a block south of Canal, one block west of Mulberry on Baxter Street. Surprisingly, they are essentially two different communities Canal Street to be the dividing line. I recall many occasions crossing Canal Street, and needing to run in my existence, to not catch a beating in the above-Canal Street toughs, who considered me an enemy on their own sacred turf. Positive thing I had been a quick runner.
Petruzzelli creates short sections, with game titles like "Street games," "Hands-Made Scooters and Wagons," "The Fireplace Hydrant" and "Street Ball," which exactly parallels the way in which things were after i would be a kid becoming an adult in Little Italia. We performed exactly the same games, sometimes within the same places, but more frequently not.
Petruzzelli creates an instalment on "James Center," a youth focus on Hester Street, where I performed basketball and softball many occasions. I recall the basketball court at James Center was short and narrow, with two beams hanging parallel around the ceiling, in one basket to another, which makes it impossible to shoot from the corner. The only real jump shots which were possible were from round the key.
However when Petruzzelli creates about neighborhood restaurants and niche luncheonettes, he lists completely different ones than people from below Canal Street visited. Petruzzelli mentions restaurants like Puglia's, Vincent's Calm Bar, Angelo's and Grotta Azzura, all places where I from time to time ate. But he does not mention fine restaurants like Forlini's, Antica Roma, The Lime House and Giambone's, that have been the faves of individuals who resided below Canal. He creates an instalment on Dave's Corner, that was popular eatery on a corner of Canal and Broadway, but that's the only real bistro both of us visited regularly. (Likely to entire chapter during my novel Find Large Body fat Fanny Fast that happens in Dave's Corner.)
Petruzzelli totally manages to lose me as he mentions the grammar schools, high schools and parks he visited. Under "Grammar School," he lists PS 130 because the school that "everybody within the neighborhood went too." Not true for all of us who resided below Canal Street. Everybody I understood visited Transfiguration Grammar School at 29 Mott Street, that was a Catholic school which had a really small tuition to go to. If a person below Canal could not pay the fee, they visited PS 24, on a corner of Mulberry and Bayard.
Petruzzelli also mentions Haaren Senior High School in Hell's Kitchen because the public senior high school the majority of his buddies "made the decision to go to.Inch Yet below Canal, the majority of us visited Catholic high schools like Cardinal Hayes within the Bronx, where I attended, or Lasalle Academy, situated almost in the actual neighborhood, at Sixth Street between Second and Third Avenue. The general public school of preference for individuals below Canal Street was Seward Park Senior High School, also near to the Little Italia, on Grand Street near Kent.
The chapter that actually puzzles me is a titled "Playing within the Parks." Petruzzelli mentions Christie Street Park because the one he and the pals hung in, but he does not even mention Columbus Park, on Mulberry, only one block south of Canal. Everybody I understood, both previously mentioned and below Canal Street, hung in Columbus Park. We performed cards around the numerous benches and performed baseball, football and basketball within the large concrete sports area, with 100s of neighborhood watching people the league sporting occasions, many of them previously mentioned Canal Street.
Individuals variations aside, "Reminiscences of Becoming An Adult in Little Italia, NY - A Memoir by Guz Petruzzelli" is really a fine read. I simply wish it was longer, so Petruzzelli might have incorporated the places in Little Italia which individuals people who resided below Canal Street visited too.
No reference to Columbus Park in Little Italia within the 50's and 60's? That's similar to writing a magazine about becoming an adult within the South Bronx, and never mentioning Yankee Stadium.
